When I first started thinking about a game and how it would function, I first came across the idea of using other PNP examples and themes that I liked from other tv shows, and games. I really wanted my game to reflect some type of fantasy theme and I thought instantly about Hansel and Gretel. I thought that a maze type game where you had to get all the "children" back to their town would be fun. So the Hansel and Gretel theme sounded promising. I had doubts though since I did not want to walk over a copy right and I really did try to come up with my own ideas. However, I needed some help with the process and this helped me develop my game into what it is currently.
Candy land was a game which in my opinion had a good theme that illustrated well to an audience. It had a lot of colors, shapes and attracted different audiences especially with kids. I used this game as a reference to my game (with my illustration behind my game) and also using a simple design behind the game. Also fantasy TV shows that are doing well such as Game of Thrones, Once Upon a Time that I liked especially concerning character development, and using fairytales in an interesting twist.
Going back to my game, reinforcing the theme in my game was challenging. Coming up with a name was also a challenge to tie into the theme of Hansel and Gretel. I thought of different names but in the end the best part about the story I thought was the bread crumbs. So, my title became bread crumbs which I do not know if I like it all the way but for now I am satisfied. I also tried to include the idea of "bread crumbs" with the diagonal pieces which have changed from bread loafs (though I am still considering them staying in the game).
After reading the chapter, I read that a game changed the board to look more like a pirate ship. I am thinking about changing the board to make it more appealing but I find that the illustrations around the game are appealing enough to get the message across that it has to do with Hansel and Gretel. The characters I also find are simple enough to give across the message of children and a witch.
Resonance of the game for my game is not that deep. It can be hard to think of a deeper meaning behind the theme of hansel and Gretel but I thought that if my game was fun, entertaining, escaped the world around, and is simple enough to understand. So, even though my game is more shallow, is simple enough and comes off as more of a "children" game, I feel like the success of it being fun I have already gained achievement.
Some quotes I came up with when I was thinking about my game was:
"Falling behind is not an option"
"No child gets left behind"
"Sacrifice is necessary"
"Sacrifice one for others survival"
My favorite quote which best describes my game was the "no child gets left behind" however, since it is already a popular quote, another one I came up with is "falling behind is not an option". To win the game, you really have to make sure that none of your characters get too far behind the others or else you will be fighting for more time and might even get stuck behind the gates. It also goes behind the idea of not being able to go backwards in the game (so you must always go forward and never fall behind).
